What is WiFi Calling?
Wi-Fi Calling is a technology that enables a smartphone user to make and receive calls over a wireless internet connection. It is known as VoWiFi Calling means Voice Over Wi-Fi Calling.
It doesn't require both the sender or receiver have WiFi calling facility. Only the sender of a call needs a smartphone that supports Wi-Fi Calling; the receiver can be on a wireless, cellular, or landline connection.
What's the difference between VoLTE and VoWifi And why they need ?
There's a time when we use only calling facility with the cellular networks and signals. Call drop, network down, etc have common in rural areas or remote areas and in underground rooms. When internet comes in the world, network operator create a system called which is known as VoLTE to reduce this problem. Internet and calling is surf in same signal and frequency range so, network operator found an idea to upload the audio data or audio signals via internet while the call is in network.
This leads an idea to other internet provider too. Because internet can be provided by any internet provider. This leads to create Wi-Fi Calling system.
Why Wi-Fi Calling have came late in account ?
Wi-Fi Calling could be came earlier but WiFi networks where the internet comes from, like our wifi or public wifi, company, hotels wifi can be attacked by attackers by MIM(Man In the Middle attack) method. Attacker could missuse our audio data or interfere us or disturb us. We were not safe earlier. So to remove this problem a platform generated called VPN tunnel, in which audio data is transfered from sender to wifi router to vpn tunnel to network operator to reciever via cellular tower. In this sound is encrypted through IPSec system which is different from VoLTE which use IP network system.
Is sim card required in WiFi Calling and is it required that both phones have wifi calling facility ?
No, it doesn't require both phones have wifi calling enabled system. But the call is coming through network tower only. It doesn't matter what the frequency or signal have in your phone when the connection is established between them(sender and reciever). The network is shifted to WiFi router to network operator, which transfers audio data or audio signals as the speed which wifi router provides.
Here, is the point to be noted that only the audio data is tranfered via WiFi, so cell network is required which is 10% signal requirement.
We must have an active sim card with an active plan which normal call requires. WiFi calling is nothing just to help the low signal areas to connect their calls.
How to use WiFi calling or How to enable WiFi calling ?
- Sim operator have must wifi calling facility.
- Mobile phones or devices must have software and hardware of this protocol.
In some phones hardware is present but it has not this function. Because that Phone company haven't tested or checked this function or found malfunction in it. But we can enable it manually by software change or some tricky methods like, in some how to enable wifi calling in oneplus devices :
- Call *#800#
- Click on one plus log key
- Click on function switch
- Click tick mark in VoWiFi Switch.
Then you need to go sim setting and enable wifi calling.
You can check your Wi-Fi calling in your
>Settings
>Sim cards and Mobile Networks
> sim card settings
> enable wifi calling
if present.
